Butter up the fairy bread…

This year, Little Village Creative turned 7!

To mark this momentous occasion, we asked some of our Little Villagers to relive their fondest memories of childhood birthdays past, and imagine what their dream 7th birthday might look like today.

So settle in, grab a sticky handful of red frogs, and get ready to reminisce!

My dream 7th birthday would be a pink, red-cordial-and fairy-bread-filled dress-up extravaganza! There’d be a jumping castle and hair crimping station with the Spice Girls on endless repeat in the background.
— Jena, Designer
My chaotic, Y2K-inspired dream 7th birthday would’ve looked a little something like this: Playstation game matches while sitting on squeaky blow-up chairs in a range of glittery pinks & blues, followed by a massive collective chalk art session in the street that inevitably transitions into a BMX/skate adventure around the suburbs. All playing out to an eclectic but carefully curated soundtrack on the 6-CD stereo system - think Britney Spears and The Backstreet Boys, to The Prodigy and Korn - and enough cordial to warrant a Child Protection call!
— Ashleigh, Campaign Manager
I actually remember my 7th birthday party! It was filled with the same things I still love now. I went bowling with my friends and we played arcade games. My cake was shaped like SpongeBob SquarePants and we ate pizza for dinner. The coolest part was everyone signed a bowling pin for me to keep. I still have it packed away in a box somewhere.

Many of my childhood birthdays were spent at the local playground — my favourite spot. I used to beg my mum and dad to take me down to the local park to play on the swings and slides. I was fortunate enough to take my 4 year old daughter back to that park this year when we returned to the UK on holiday. It was surreal seeing her play on the same equipment I used to, although it’s looking a little worse for wear now!
— Matt, Finished Artist
Gosh my 7th birthday - EVERYTHING was about ballet and dancing and everything had to be pale pink like ballet shoes, tights and tutus. I was obsessed with dancing and music, ribbons, sequins, lycra and tulle - so that included Madonna of course and the Like a Virgin album on cassette. I loved balloons and streamers (pink of course!!) and my mind was totally blown by those foil Helium Balloons - which were such a super treat! My birthday cake was always lovingly made by my gran; a light sponge filled with butter cream and slices of strawberries and decorated with buttercream, chocolate shavings, edible coloured beads and a birthday message. The most fun was blowing the candles out and not so much eating the cake...which the grown ups always seemed to enjoy more anyway..
— Gale, Client Partner
A big party at my parents backyard with lots and lots of balloons and barbies everywhere. Lots of snacks and sweets to share, mainly pretzels (yep, I didn’t actually like chocolate as a little girl). Also, music and dancing with an entertainer dressed as a barbie or a fairy. Games, laughs and lots of fun all around!
— Efrat, Digital Marketing Director
A dream birthday for 7-year-old me would kick off with a rewatch of Aladdin on VHS accompanied by a big bowl of Froot Loops (a rare treat!). Then, after taking my new neon pink rollerblades for a spin, I’d throw on a cossie and head to the backyard for hours of running through the sprinkler and rolling around in the grass. Perfection.
— Jess, Copywriter
Watching Pippi Longstocking in the morning, followed by a delicious lunch prepared by my mother with love. My friends would have come over for cake, something really creamy like a Saint Honoré. Maybe I would have been given some Lego Paradisia as a gift. We would have then gone for a very fun treasure hunt and I wouldn’t have wanted the day to end!
— Mathilde, Art Director
A mountain of fairy bread, salami and cheese sandwiches, swimming, playing tag and chasey with sister, me dressed up as Wonder Woman (yep, I’m an 80s baby) and tonnes of bubblegum ice cream!
— Cassandra, Designer
My dream 7th birthday wouldn’t be too far off one of my fondest childhood birthdays. It’s 1988 and everyone is coming dressed as their favourite cartoon heroes. I am, of course, secret agent Danger Mouse (complete with Mickey Mouse ears painted white), and my friends all come as Superman, Jem and the Holograms, Thundercats, Transformers, He-Man, and The Snorks. We chase each other around the yard on crime-fighting adventures and eat a robot cake that mum has lovingly made from the famous Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book. Take me back!
— Todd, Designer
At age 7 I was an all-out tomboy, so my favourite Ninja Turtles t-shirt would’ve been mandatory party wear! I loved water fights, so inevitably there’d be water bombs and a super soaker at the ready for unsuspecting guests. Queen would’ve been playing on infinite loop on the cassette player (because Freddie Mercury FOREVER) and not being much of a sweet tooth, I would’ve been straight into the Burger Rings and Cheerios. Pretty much exactly how I celebrate my birthday as an adult!
